What are GMOs and why it Matters to Big Companies

•GMOs are organisms whose genetics have been modified: According to Goldbas, GMOs are organisms whose genetic make-up have been changed by mutating, inserting, or deleting genes; using genetic engineering techniques or biotechnology.

•A new way to modifying organisms: Although modifying organisms has been around for centuries, it is the new way in which we modify their genetic information that becomes the problem. With the use of genetic engineering techniques and biotechnology, there is still little to no knowledge about their long term effects on humans (Goldbas).

•Big companies are the direct distributors of GMOs to consumers: As the food distributors to the public, consumers will display direct blame to businesses by boycotting companies who’ve sold them foods and products that can potentially harm them.

•Big Question: Why, in comparison to the European Union, does the government overlook the regulation of modified organisms: This question matters to your company because it is the food you are selling that may not be getting regulated properly by our government. Since the United States and many countries in Europe have similar societies, it’s accurate to ask why these two countries differ so much when it comes to what they feed their citizens.
